This theoretical notion has been discussed extensively during the second half of the twentieth-century finding its latest evolvement in intercultural theological approaches. So most theologians agree on the fact that theology is always based on experience. But to transform this theoretical insight into a curriculum of theological formation is not at all easy. How can this be done? The Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Vienna, Austria, has established a partnership which facilitates a programme of exposure for theology students of Vienna and Manila, Philippines. Participating observation and cooperative theological reflection are the core elements of theological learning that puts life and theology into relation. The first step of this programme is to travel to the home country of the other partner. Being exposed to a foreign culture broadens one’s perspective for seeing the previously unknown and repressed, namely the life-reality of the poor and marginalized. Sharing with other theologians from both cultures lifts personal experience to a level of inter-subjectivity and, in common theological reflection, this becomes the basis for new theological insights. This practice of ‘communicative theology’ enables the theologians to develop new ideas about solidarity and the ‘church of the poor’ in different contexts. |
