Document Details : Title: La pharmacopée syriaque exploitée d'un point de vue linguistique Author(s): GIGNOUX, Philippe Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 124 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2011 Pages: 11-26 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.124.1.2118188 Abstract : Syriac pharmacopeia has not been sufficiently studied in recent years. Yet it is a priceless source for research in comparative linguistics. In this article in which the author does not intend to be exhaustive, are used two Syriac treatises: an anonymous published by Budge in 1919, the other one from the BNF, Paris, being still unedited. A lot of fifteen plant names, the majority of which are employed in medicinal receipts, are studied from a linguistic point of view. The author would like to show how these names passed from a language to other ones, namely from Greek to Syriac or from Middle-Persian or New persian to Syriac. The variety of language changes also witness the transmission of the Hippocrates and Galen’s medicine and pharmacopeia by the Syrians to the Iranian world. |
