Abstract :

This is a biographical essay of my itinerary studying modernity in Mediterranean Islamic painting. First as the archeology of this modernity, in the 19th century, starting with the collection of Khalil Bey, the 'Turc des boulevards', who was for a time the owner of Ingres Turkish Bath; secondly, through the works of students and colleagues who have worked on these topics: Deniz Artun, Silvia Naef, and Boutros Al-Maari, confronted with my own studies on the emergence of professional painting in Algeria.
