Abstract :
In this article, Stewart Gordon explores the world of Khil'a, the ceremony that featured elite textiles sewn into particular garments to define a relationship of honourable service. Between about 600 BC and AD 1900, this ceremony was practised at courts from China in the East to the Atlantic Coast of North-western Africa.
