Abstract :

Many Ancient Greek -stems referring to parts of the body and some cereal designations of the same type show an oxytonesis which does not agree with the usual accentual pattern of the concrete -stems. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the origin of this specific accentuation, which is partly to be linked to the accentuation of Proto-Indo-European collectives. On the basis of an analysis of the Greek data, we raise the question of the conditions governing this accentuation. As we examine the suffixal types involved, and the analogical processes which took place, we show how this oxytonesis, which must be an archaism in several words, developed in these two lexical fields.
