Abstract :
The terms used by modern historians in relation to secondary colonisation (especially sub-colonisation and sub-colony) seem to have no historical foundation: they are often incoherent or incorrect. This lexical analysis demonstrates that people in antiquity did not use different terms for primary and secondary colonies, although they there perfectly conscious of the particularity and diversity of the phenomenon of secondary colonisation. In particular, they employed verbs which described for them the precise mechanisms. The author proposes new translations of these.
