Abstract :

Based on Ottoman and Mameluke sources, this article deals with the question of the intellectual, social and religious relations, initiating between the Mameluke sultanate and the young Ottoman state. During the period between about 1380-1430, the latter, in need of forming elites, sends students to Egypt, country that attracts also 'people from Rûm', yearning for social ascension. A few examples show that the first Ottoman (and Anatolian Turkmen) lawyers, physicians, historians, poets and mystics, had for most of them an Egyptian education.
