Abstract :

This paper presents the transliteration, a translation and a commentary of a very unique piece of Phnong literature. The Phnong author, Nchööp, was born in the Cambodian province of Mondulkiri (North-East of Cambodia). This text, which he composed in his late fifties, gives his account of 'a contentious issue' that took place in the villages near Sen Monorum (provincial capital of Mondulkiri) when he was still a child. Nkran a young man in his twenties ends his relationship with Grööt, his bride. Mbrii a young man from a near-by village falls in love with her. Mbrii and Grööt get married. Nkran becomes angry and to avenge the couple, he removes Mbrii and Grööt ‘s possessions from their house. This act brings about a «legal case» that must then be settled. The author meticuliously describes every step of the different procedures (the betrothal, the wedding and the trial). Of particular interest is Nchööp‘s quoting of the traditional poems in the very context of their recitation. The author of the present article describes the different literary and linguistic means that are put to use in traditional Phnong literature as well as the different ways the Phnong people employ traditional poems in order to address socially important issues. This short introduction into Phnong literature and society should be of interest to all researchers in the humanities and social sciences concerned with South East Asian social groups.
