Même si cette position s’inscrit dans un contexte politique très précis aux USA, je voudrais centrer ici mon propos sur une analyse épistémologique de la problématique. Il sera procédé en trois temps. Je voudrais tout d’abord étudier la question d’un point de vue strictement scientifique. Puisque l’Intelligent Design vise au statut de théorie scientifique, les arguments développés seront analysés et nous verrons dans quelle mesure ceux-ci renouvellent le débat évolutionniste, ou si au contraire ils s’inscrivent dans une argumentation classique, historiquement présente dans le débat. En une deuxième partie, plus proprement philosophique, je voudrais aborder la question des relations entre science, philosophie et théologie, à la fois d’un point de vue historique et épistémologique, afin de préciser une articulation possible entre ces trois démarches dans le cas particulier des théories de l’évolution biologique. Enfin, comme il semble que la problématique du hasard est au coeur des discussions autour du darwinisme, je voudrais, en guise d’ouverture, évoquer certaines dimensions philosophiques du hasard qui ouvrent à des interprétations théologiques prometteuses. Intelligent Design is presented as a scientific theory that explains the evolution of biological species and seeks to propose a conception that ties in with the biblical interpretation of a «finalised» creation. Even if this standpoint is found in a very precise political context in the USA, I wish to concentrate here on an epistemological analysis of the problematic. There will be three stages. I wish, firstly, to study the question from a purely scientific viewpoint. Since Intelligent Design claims the status of scientific theory, let us analyse the arguments put forward and let us see to what extent they renew the evolutionary debate, or whether on the contrary they belong to classical argumentation, historically present in the debate. In a second, more properly philosophical part, I wish to approach the question of the relationship between science, philosophy and theology, both from a historical and from an epistemological point of view, in order to set out a possible articulation between these three ways of proceeding in the particular case of theories of biological evolution. Finally, as it appears that the problematic of chance is at the heart of discussions concerning Darwinism, I wish, by way of opening the discussion, to examine certain philosophical dimensions of chance that make way for promising theological interpretations. |
