Document Details : Title: Des Yamāmī dans l'Enderta (Tigre) Author(s): SCHNEIDER, Madeleine Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 122 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2009 Pages: 131-148 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.122.1.2037154 Abstract : Thanks to their tombstones we know that from the last quarter of the IVth/Xth century to the first half of the Vth/XIth century a family from Yamāma settled in Enderta (Entärta/Andärta). The Yamāmī people, who used to work in the mines, travelled from their country to Upper Egypt, to the wādī l-‘Allāqī where one of their tribes took possession of the gold mines. Our epitaphs show that our Yamāmī family chose another direction: Dahlak then Quiha/Kwiha. This village is situated near Mäqälä, the most important market for salt which was used as currency throughout Ethiopia. The men of our family were maybe trading in salt. |
