Abstract :

The emergence of the structures of the modern theory of objective representation at the turn of the fourteenth century constitutes a major event in the history of metaphysics, if not a genuine turning-point towards its modern form. One of the interpretations at present proposed by historians consists in maintaining that metaphysics progressively developed into a universal theory of the object, into a «tinology». This hypothesis is submitted to critical examination in the present article. By taking up the question of the origin of transcendentalism from the history of subjectivity, and particularly from the relationship of human thought to divine thought, and not from the object or the structure of metaphysics as a science, we obtain a clearly different history, which attests that, well before Kant, certain philosophers or theologians examined the delicate problem of the relationship between the structures of reality and the structures of representation.
