Document Details : Title: Les Grecs et leurs rapports avec les Arméniens dans les sources arméniennes du XIIe siècle Author(s): AUGÉ, Isabelle Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 121 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2008 Pages: 337-352 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.121.3.2034325 Abstract : The purpose of this article is to study the figure of Greek, conveyed by the Armenian XIIth century sources, relating to the religious negotiations, opened at that time, between the court of Constantinople and the Catholicos of Hromkla. Therefore, the viewed documents consist mainly of letters and some controversial opuscules. The presentation of the Greek opponents by the authors can be shown according to three distinct main lines: First of all, the classic image of Greek as persecutor, ready to use all possible means to achieve conversion of the Armenians, still has great resonance. But, beyond that, the image of Greek as lost brother, sharing very widely the foundations of the common faith, patristic texts or, as well, ecumenical and local councils, is shown also, in the context of political and religious rapprochement. Finally, the article lays stress on the fact that Greek appears, first of all, in the studied period, as a resort to the military level, which superiority about that matter is far from being denied. |
