It took more than a month before the final settlement was agreed on because the generals, all of them striving to get as much personal power as possible, did not easily reach a compromise. Moreover, the infantrymen were not prepared to accept just any decision the generals made. This paper analyses the decisions taken in the various stages leading to the Babylon settlement, including the complex problem of the distribution of offices, as well as the decision-making process. It shows how Perdikkas eventually achieved a very unstable supremacy after making many concessions, while some of the other Successors seem to have preferred a territorial power base in one of the satrapies. |
