Abstract :
The Georgian chronicle The Histories and Eulogies of the Sovereigns (13th c.) relates about the rule of King Giorgi III (1156-1184) and Queen Tamar (1184-1211/12). The article deals with the Weltanschauung of the anonymous author of the chronicle. His ideas about the role of Christian military ideology, and at the same time his interest for non Christian heroes is sometimes quite contradictory. This concerns also his opinions about Christian and in particular Georgian domination in the world. His Christian military ideology bears a striking resemblance to the Crusaders’ ideology of the Latin West. The anonymous author propagates the Holy War against muslims and heathens. He is full of resentments against them, but on the other side he expresses ideas of human and religious tolerance. The author of the chronicle is thus inspired by antique and oriental cultural traditions. He makes the literary attempt to integrate them in his own Weltanschauung and to reconcile biblical, antique and persian heritage with the Georgian national tradition.
