Abstract :
While this sixth-century text has hitherto been interpreted as either exegetical or mystical, the present paper proposes that it is in fact a draft of a liturgical formulation, specifically a fragment of an ordination rite for clergy of the separating Miaphysite church of Egypt. Such a cultural production would have been a matter of urgency in the political and ecclesiological circumstances obtaining in Egypt in the 530s/540s.
