Abstract :
Many Christian thinkers are currently proposing that the Godhead be conceived of as a vast, incomprehensible being present in many religions, an approach that can be referred to as an «appeal to mystery.» Appeals to mystery closely resemble the philosophical arguments of antiquity that were used to justify the tolerance of a wide range of religious sects within the Roman Empire. However, the Church fathers rejected these approaches, for they conflicted with the emerging conception of Christ as the fullness of God become human. Additionally, classic approaches in India and contemporary approaches among many Indian Christian theologians exhibit the same problem. In spite of these difficulties, an appeal to mystery can be developed in a manner that does not diminish the intimacy between God and humanity in Jesus Christ but instead builds upon it.
