Abstract :
The article deals with the short but multifaceted life of Nicholas of Prüm who was the first professor to hold the chair of canon law at the newly founded university of Louvain from 1426 to 1435. It points out the numerous stages of his academic and ecclesiastical career. Born around 1400, Nicholas of Prüm took up his studies at the University of Erfurt in 1412, continued them in Vienna, Cologne and Pavia and completed them with three doctorates in arts, canon and civil law. 1417 he was appointed to his first professorship of arts in Cologne which he kept until 1426 when he received the call to Louvain. Beyond his teaching activities he was entrusted with various ecclesiastical functions like the offices of lawyer and judge of appeal at the diocese court of Cologne. From 1432 to 1435 he worked for Ulrich of Manderscheid, archbishop elect of Treves, as his representative when exercising his episcopal jurisdiction. From 1438 to his death in 1439 (caused by the plague) Nicholas of Prüm participated in the Council of Basle as a member of the peace deputation and as a rota judge.
