Abstract :

A discussion of the two main New Kingdom (Ramesside) stories that partake of many folkloric elements. The approach taken concentrates upon the royal influence that is paramount in both The Doomed Prince and The Story of the Two Brothers. Particular care is spent to connect these two narratives with V. Propps' understanding of the roots of the folktale. Analyzed here are the various uses to which the earlier motifs were applied within an Egyptian setting. Questions surrounding their reinterpretation and omission are also carefully examined.
