Abstract :
This article discusses the so-called Pesel Collection, which was bequeathed to the University of Leeds upon the death of Louisa Frances Pesel (1870-1947), a close acquaintance of William Morris. Pesel was a professional embroiderer, who in 1920 was elected as the First President of the Embroiders’ Guild of England, and in 1938 was appointed as 'Mistress of Broderers of Winchester Cathedral'. The collection includes notebooks, photographs, coloured plates, drawings, lantern slides and embroidery samples. The embroidery is mostly of Near Eastern or Mediterranean origin; a few pieces derive from Europe, India or China.
