Abstract :

After briefly recalling the antiquity and the richness of Tamil literature the author gives a short biography of Edouard Ariel, the second indianist after Anquetil Duperron, but far less known because of his very early death and of the absence of his publications in spite of his numerous collection and compilation works in Pondicherry. He shows how Ariel, in his French translations of Attisudy and Tirukkural, chosen in the sapiencial literature, tried to show the beauty of the language to his master Eugène Burnouf. After recalling other modern imitations of the genre he advocates strongly for the rehabilitation of his memory.
