Abstract :
Hendricus Jacobus Franken was born on July 14th in Amsterdam where his father, also named Hendricus and an accountant by profession, was serving as a Captain in the Dutch Army. However after the end of the Great War Hendricus senior returned to civilian life. Hendricus Jacobus was the eldest of a family which came to comprise 5 children — 3 sons and 2 daughters, all of whom were gifted people. One brother became an internationally reputed eye surgeon, and the other a composer who “sometimes wrote for 498 performers”.
