Abstract :
These selections from Renaissance Italian humanist wedding orations are taken, with kind permission, from the recent book by Anthony F. D’Elia: The Renaissance of Marriage, Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2004. He presents a substantial study of this body of marriage literature from fifteenth-century Italy (much of it never before published, much the less translated), and in his monograph cites abundant excerpts from the orations. The selection below attempts to give a flavour of the attitudes to marriage that one encounters in these fascinating texts.
