Dr. Michael Feil, who works for the pastoral office of the German Bishops’ Conference, sketches the background of the initiative and its two main objectives. The Church first of all wants to spread a positive and optimistic image of marriage and family to counterbalance the doom-mongering that often infects the topic (but without denying its real problems and without disregarding other life choices or living arrangements). A second important aim is to take stock of the numerous family ministry programs and to coordinate them better, in the hope that more coherence on the pastoral level will strengthen the Church’s position as an advocate of a more family-friendly culture and politics. |
