Abstract :
The folk literature of the Sephardim has been widely studied for its linguistic value in understanding Old Spanish, particularly Mozarabic Spanish. In addition, the ballad literature has been most important in reconstructing the lost narratives of Spanish Peninsular ballade preserved only as fragments. In this article another dimension is given to the study of Sephardic folk literature, as we seek to penetrate to the inner nature of the remarkable people who have preserved their ballads, exemplary tales and proverbs. Here we examine what they say of themselves in the process of conserving their heritage.
