Abstract :
A first edition is provided, along with an English translation and some comments, of Syriac fragments from a commentary on the book of Job attributed to John the Solitary. The fragments are preserved in the seventh- or eighth-century manuscript London, British Library, Add. 18814, f. 91r-95r. The text, which may be dated to around AD 430, gives clear evidence of being translated from Greek. John’s authorship, therefore, cannot be maintained. The focus of the anonymous author’s interpretation is on the ascetic message of the biblical text.
