The evidence entwined in the Istanbul Rabbinical Court Records gives the historian a rare opportunity to have a glimpse into the official and normative perception of the Ottoman ruler at this period, the twilight of the Ottoman splendor, as formulated by the Jewish community. The documentation presented here is not merely a product of the Hamidian period, it is the product of generations of Jewish and Ottoman experience, as well as their reflection. This reflection sheds light on the political culture of both parties: the sultan and his Jewish subjects L’époque hamidienne vue à travers le miroir juif: une étude des registres des tribunaux rabbiniques d’Istanbul Le sultan Abdülhamid II est le seul sultan ottoman dont le règne ait été officiellement consigné par la communauté juive d’Istanbul, et ce, à travers les registres des Tribunaux rabbiniques. Ces registres existent toujours et permettent à l’historien un regard rare sur la perception officielle et normative du souverain ottoman à cette époque — le crépuscule de l’Etat ottoman — telle qu’elle a été formulée par la communauté juive. La documentation présentée ici n’est pas seulement un produit de la période hamidienne∞; c’est le produit — aussi bien que la réflexion — de générations juives dans le monde ottoman. Cette réflexion éclaire à la fois la culture politique du sultan et celle de ses sujets juifs. |
