Journal: Ancient Society Volume: 24 Date: 1993 Pages: 205-224 DOI: 10.2143/AS.24.0.2005866 Abstract : Shortly before the decisive encounter at Zama, 202 B.C., Hannibal confronts Scipio in conference and attempts unsuccessfully to sue for peace (Livy XXX 30-31, cf. Polybius XV 6-8). Both speakers review antecedent events which have culminated in their present meeting: just before the final test of strength their speeches restate leitmotivs of the third decade (fraus Punica, fides Romana, bellum iustum) and characterize the protagonists in terms of these themes. Plainly chapters 30-31 have to be read against the background of Livy’s religious ideas and of his moralizing historiography. |
