Abstract :
Le terme jwj est communément rendu par l’expression «être sans bateau». Cependant, une analyse systématique des occurrences de ce vocable montre l’incorrection de cette acception. Fondé sur la notion d’immobilisation, le champ sémantique du verbe jwj regroupe les sens «être échoué», «stagner», «être immobile», «être prostré» et, probablement, dans un registre de langue plus familier, «être en rade», «être sur le sable».

The term jwj is commonly rendered by the phrase «be boatless». Nevertheless, a systematic analysis of the occurrences of this term shows the impropriety of this meaning. Based on the notion of immobilization, the semantic field of the verb jwjincludes the meanings «to be stranded», «to stagnate», «to stand still», «to be prostrate» and, problably, in a more informal registrer of language, «to be left stranded», «to be stuck».
