Abstract :
Traditionally, the central theme of 1 Cor 11:2-16 is understood to be the question of women covering their heads during worship. 1 Cor 11:10 is therefore interpreted in this context and the term exousiaunderstood either as a head covering or as male power over the woman. The author suggests that v. 10 should however be read not as a conclusion deriving from vv. 4-9, but in as referring to v. 3. This shifts the focus away from the subordination of the woman to her active role in “having the power over the head.” For the woman is responsible for ensuring that the man can remain in relation to Christ so that he may experience the power of Christ as the conquering (kenosis) of the hard-hearted male domination. As Paul says, it is “on account of the angels” that the woman has such power of Christ over the man in worship. In early Judaism, the angels represented the spirits of the elements of the world, that is polytheism. Christianity is differentiated from polytheism through the woman’s responsibility to exert the power of Christ over the man. In ecclesiastical contexts, the woman chooses freely to cede precedence to the man. Through this concession, women share responsibility for ensuring the true preaching in the Church and are therefore named “preachers of the apostles of Jesus” in Orthodoxy.
