He held a professorship at Oxford University from 1925 until his retirement in 1969. He was married to Edith Barrett (1889-1971) for 55 years, raised four children, and was a convinced and devout catholic. The general public knows him primarily as the author of The Hobbit (1937), The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955) and the posthumously published Silmarillion (1977). The Rings trilogy was one of the first modern fantasy novels and one of the most popular books of last century. Set in a mythic prehistory, it tells the saga of a desperate battle against encroaching evil – a perilous quest to save the people of Middle Earth. Its adaptation for the screen by New Zealand director Peter Jackson, the first part of which is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on 19 December 2001 (with international releases following shortly thereafter), has caused an unprecedented Tolkien-revival. |
