Plutôt que d’être une obligation légale pour certains genres de contrat, ces copies de témoins semblent avoir été ajoutées à des transactions importantes et donc de préférence plus formelles. Elles disparurent au cours du troisième siècle av. J.-C., quand d'autres moyens de renforcer la valeur légale d’une convention deviennent en vogue. Study of the Demotic witness-copy-contracts, in which some or all of the witnesses copy the entire text of the agreement, probably as a further development of the abnormal hieratic witness-statements. Rather than being a legal obligation for specific types of contracts, the witness-copies seem to have been added to important and thus preferably more formal transactions. They disappeared in the course of the third century BC, when other means to enhance the legal value of an agreement became fashionable. |
