Abstract :
The tripartite division of spiritual life in the work of John of Apamea: Some critical remarks on some current interpretations
The problem of the identity of John of Apamea is briefly described. The author indicates which works should be considered authentic. The tripartite division of man’s relation to God in the work of John of Apamea has been subject to several interpretations. The author discusses some of the current ones. Is the ‘order’ of pagra?nuta?part of spriritual life (Hausherr), or should it be placed in the ‘order’ before spiritual life (Harb)? The author takes the part of Harb, although John of Apamea himself seems to leave room for Hausherr’s interpretation. Harb’s interpretation of the categories within pagrānutā?is also critisized. The tendency to view the whole oeuvre of John of Apamea in the light of his tripartite division of man’s relation to God is probably not correct; it is true for only one work, The Dialogue about the soul and the Passions. For John’s other works an interpretation by means of a dual partition seems to be more appropriate. For example, Hausherr’s interpretation of the order of the ruhānutā?on the basis of the tripartite division as found in John’s Lettersis not confirmed by the texts. John of Apamea’s perception of man’s relation to God is dynamic and not systematic.
