Abstract :
Naar aanleiding van een omvangrijk onderzoek over de wordingsgeschiedenis van het begrip 'stad' in de middeleeuwen werd ik onvermijdelijk geconfronteerd met het woord burg. Tot in de 12e eeuw was burg namelijk in het Engels, Duits en Nederlands het gewone Germaanse woord voor 'stad'. Dat was echter niet de oorspronkelijke betekenis van het woord.




Typology of the medieval names ending on -burg in the Low Countries
Following a vast research on the origin of the idea 'city' in the Middle Ages I was inevitable confronted with the word 'borough'. Until the 12th century 'borough' was the common name for city in Dutch, English and German. This was not the original meaning tough.
