Abstract :
Since 1920 the Old Catholic Church in Germany has marked a “women’s Sunday”, generally the first Sunday in Advent. In the eighty-one years of its existence, the “women’s Sunday” service has changed its character from a service about women to a service organised by women. Originally, the clergy generally made special mention of the work of women in the congregation in the intercessions, and sometimes also in the sermon. Later an active involvement of women in the shaping of liturgy and proclamation developed. This article demonstrates the way in which the liturgical role of women is bound up with socio-cultural and ecclesiastical images of women. Moreover, it shows the extent to which the “Bund Altkatholischer Frauen Deutschands” (League of Old Catholic Women in Germany) has encouraged women to involve themselves liturgically and has equipped them to do so.
