Abstract :
The Palmyrenes used mainly limestone for the buildings of their city. This rock is plentiful on the site and can be quarried in the neighbouring hills. Ancient quarries are to be seen to the North of Palmyra, and one finds there unfinished columns and other blocks, sawed off the rock and roughly shaped before transport to places where they were finished to become architectural members or sculptures. However, some column bases and some sarcophagi were used without ever being completed.
