Therefore, in putting the legal ideal of Islam, shari'a, at the heart of their notion of society, today's radical Islamic movements, as well as secular governments pretending to base their legal systems on Islamic essentials, are doing nothing extraordinary. However, with growing awareness of the results of the tendentious presentation of historical events in the descriptive sources, it hardly needs to be emphasized that historical arguments, brought forward as a justification for keeping up particular rules of shari'a in contemporary societies, must not be taken at face value. |
