Dehydro-epiandosteron: a rejuvenating cure?
Dehydro-epiandrosteron (DHEA) is often described as a miracle drug in a number of domains, e.g. aging. This text, based to a large extent on a document from the "Agence de Sécurité Sanitaire des Produits de Santé" in France, tries to summarize the evidence for and against use of DHEA.
The plasma concentrations of DHEA decrease progressively after the age of 45, with large inter- and intraindividual variations. There is, however, no evidence that administration of DHEA influences the aging process. On the other hand, unwanted effects of such administration cannot be excluded.
In view of the absence of evidence for a beneficial effect, and the possibility of side-effects, administration of DHEA in order to slow down the aging process cannot be recommended.
