The famous interventions of Cardinals A. Liénart (Lille, France) and J. Frings (Cologne, Germany) are usually presented as the first time that bishops, especially those open for reforms, voiced their feelings. Afterwards episcopal conferences began to meet to prepare lists with candidates for the elections. Our presentation of the preparation for and outcome of these interventions aims at a reconstruction of the events at the end of September and the beginning of October 1962, showing the motives of Liénart, Frings – and of many others. |
