Document Details : Title: Gilles Deleuzes rizomatische lectuur van schilderkunst en literatuur Author(s): VERGOTE, Dorine Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 87 Issue: 4 Date: 2025 Pages: 587-609 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.87.4.3295732 Abstract : According to Gilles Deleuze, there exists a community of the arts, and all art forms share a single problem: their relationship to forces. Consequently, art is not about reproducing or inventing forms, but about capturing forces. In this essay, I examine how the sensation of lines, colours, words and sounds in the work of Franz Kafka and Francis Bacon triggers a shock experience or a sense of ‘Unheimlichkeit’ that can block or break our habitual sensorimotor schemes. As a result of what we might call the violence of ‘sensation’, a different type of image emerges: a pure opticalsonorous image, a full image, void of metaphor, the thing itself. The emergence of the Figure is inherently linked to this ‘sensation’. To achieve this, Bacon must rid himself of all clichés, while Kafka fights against meaning and metaphor (which is merely a circuitous movement). According to Deleuze, Bacon and Kafka are creators of Figures that are unyielding. Renouncing spectacle in favour of ‘sensation’ bears witness to an exceptional vitality and serves the cause of Life. |
