More broadly, the entire body of Peter Lombard’s work entered and shaped the theological thought of the time. The present article examines the early reception of the Lombard’s writings and ideas through the lens of the theological materials preserved in the cathedral library of Pistoia. Since the end of the eleventh century, the Tuscan city had hosted a prominent school, led by the cathedral canons, and was well integrated into the European cultural network of the time; the school had already acquired Peter Lombard’s works by the second half of the twelfth century. The article explores this material, showing how the Lombard’s influence can be seen within a multifarious cultural landscape and across various fields, ranging from biblical exegesis to theological debates. |
