It addresses the nature of the claims to universal validity that phenomenology makes for its findings and poses the question of the justification and limits of these claims. Husserl primarily conceives of his phenomenology as a theory of experience that goes beyond the mere empirical collection of psychological facts. As an eidetic theory of consciousness, phenomenology’s central methodological question is how descriptive analyses of subjective experience can yield objective insights that hold a priori, that is, with essential necessity beyond individual factual cases. The study reconstructs the aim, starting point, and procedural steps of the eidetic method; it clarifies the notions of essential universality and eidetic intuition, and analyses the relation between free variation and abstraction. It also discusses the role of the eidetic method within transcendental phenomenology, including its connection to the transcendental ego. The paper shows that first-person descriptions do not, in themselves, disclose essential relations. These can be systematically disclosed only by way of eidetic variation, the distinctive method aimed at verifying claims to a priori validity, whether positively, by confirming them, or negatively, by refuting them. |
