Author(s): ROMANO, Claude Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 87 Issue: 3 Date: 2025 Pages: 425-453 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.87.3.3295571 Abstract : This text seeks to evaluate the contribution of the phenomenological debates on essence among Husserl, Reinach, Ingarden, Hering, and Scheler by comparing their doctrines with contemporary developments in the theory of essence in the context of the revival of essentialism that has emerged in analytical metaphysics, particularly with the two main traditions of this essentialism: the modal conception of essence, in the wake of the work of Saul Kripke, Ruth Barcan-Marcus, and David Lewis, and the non-modal conception, developed by Kit Fine, closely aligned with Husserl’s conception. It thus examines the legacy of historical phenomenology for these contemporary debates. |
