Document Details : Title: Translating Neo-Latin Texts for Contemporary Audiences Subtitle: Some Methodological Reflections Author(s): DE SMET, Ingrid A.R. Journal: Humanistica Lovaniensia Volume: 72 Date: 2023 Pages: 451-485 DOI: 10.2143/HLO.72.0.3292730 Abstract : Whilst the interaction between Neo-Latin and the vernacular has been a fertile field of study and the body of modern translations of Neo-Latin texts keeps expanding, there have been very few reflections on the value and challenges of rendering Neo-Latin texts into a modern vernacular idiom. This paper reviews the scant existing methodological advice on the topic and traces the evolving attitudes towards translation since the emergence of Neo-Latin Studies as a discipline. Taking developments in neighbouring and intersecting fields such as Classics, Intellectual History, Modern Languages, and Translation Studies, into consideration, it formulates principles that may be of benefit for current and emerging generations of Neo-Latin specialists. Finally, it breaks a lance for the proper acknowledgement of ‘translation as research’. |
