Journal: Humanistica Lovaniensia Volume: 72 Date: 2023 Pages: 245-259 DOI: 10.2143/HLO.72.0.3292721 Abstract : In the environment of Adán Centurión (1582-1658), 3rd Marquis of Estepa, strange linguistic speculations occurred about the original language spoken in Spain. In this context, the Castilian language acquired the status of peninsular Ursprache. The scholarly discussions that took place in the Marquis’ library about this topic constitute an example of the esoteric discourses dedicated to describing post-Babelic linguistic development during the humanistic era. The point of this essay is the identification of the authorities adduced and the reconstruction of the arguments used at don Adán’s home to demonstrate that Castilian was spoken before Latin in Spain. |
