Document Details : Title: Mylasa under Ptolemaic and Seleucid Rule Subtitle: The Royal Officer Sophron in I. Labraunda 3 Author(s): DOMINGO GYGAX, Marc Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 22 Date: 2023 Pages: 213-222 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.22.0.3292248 Abstract : Olympichus’ letter to Mylasa, I. Labraunda 3, refers to documents sent to the polis by a royal officer named Sophron and by Ptolemy ‘the brother of King Ptolemy (III)’. A great deal has been written about the latter, the famous Ptolemy the Son, co-regent of Ptolemy II. But Sophron is also a challenging figure who deserves our attention. This paper investigates whether Sophron was a Ptolemaic or Seleucid representative when he dealt with Mylasa, the chronology of this interaction and Sophron’s subsequent career. |
