Document Details : Title: The Ptolemaic State and Red Sea Elephant Hunting Author(s): WILKINSON, Troy Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 22 Date: 2023 Pages: 193-211 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.22.0.3292247 Abstract : Studies of ancient Graeco-Roman activity in and around the Red Sea have, due to the quantity of surviving evidence, tended to focus on the imperial Roman period. However, by examining how the Ptolemaic state organised the hunting of elephants around the southern coast of the Red Sea, this article argues that the Ptolemies were also heavily involved in the economic exploitation of the Red Sea region. Such a conclusion further supports arguments in favour of the importance of Ptolemaic precedents for facilitating activity in and around the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean. |
