Document Details : Title: The Next Best Thing to a Saint? Subtitle: Peter Lombard and the Sentences in the Principia of John of Naples Author(s): SCHUT, Kirsten Journal: Recherches de Théologie et Philosophie Médiévales Volume: 84 Issue: 2 Date: 2017 Pages: 343-381 DOI: 10.2143/RTPM.84.2.3269050 Abstract : This article discusses a previously understudied group of principia from the sermon collection of the early fourteenth-century Dominican theologian John of Naples (Giovanni Regina). The first part of the article presents the case for John’s authorship of these texts and argues that the principia may have originated as opening lectures for courses in theology that John taught at the Dominican studium generale in Naples. The second part concentrates on the principia that deal with Peter Lombard’s Sentences, examining the highly laudatory way John talks about the Sentences and its author. One of these principia is edited in the appendix. |
