Document Details : Title: The Polysemy of Πάλιν Subtitle: With Particular Attention to Mark 15,13 (and John 18,40) Author(s): CARLSON, Stephen C. Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 93 Issue: 1 Date: 2017 Pages: 51-74 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.93.1.3203591 Abstract : Polysemy presents a challenge for lexicographers because polysemous words have a number of distinct but related senses. For the iterative adverb πάλιν, the Bauer lexica identify four senses – restitution, repetition, parallelism, and contrast – but none of these senses seem appropriate to the use of πάλιν in Mark 15,13 and John 18,40. This article presents a full and detailed semantic analysis of πάλιν in the New Testament based on recent linguistic and lexicological research, especially that of Revuelta Puigdollers, and offers some practical guidance for construing this word in these two problem cases. |
