Document Details : Title: 'I Feared' or 'I Saw' in Habakkuk 3,2? Author(s): BANISTER, Jamie Journal: Biblica Volume: 97 Issue: 4 Date: 2016 Pages: 527-536 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.97.4.3186054 Abstract : This article calls into question the practice of emending יראתי ('I feared') to ראיתי ('I saw') in Hab 3,2, often by suggesting that ראה provides a more suitable parallel to שמע than does ירא. This paper demonstrates that 'I feared' should actually be preferred for several reasons on the basis of textual and contextual evidence. Moreover, this paper argues that there is a theologically significant pairing of שמע and ירא in Deuteronomy that may have influenced their appearance in Habakkuk 3, thus demonstrating that ירא can provide a logical parallel for שמע. |
