The essay examines some aspects of Paul’s use of his traditions. Paul uses a range of different traditions. He is also at times highly critical of some traditions: he is very negative about some aspects of the Jewish Law, and he claims the freedom to reject the validity of some of the teachings of Jesus he cites. Finding a rationale for Paul’s diverse views is not easy, but it is suggested that the primacy of freedom for others may provide some coherence for Paul’s varying statements. Taking note of this underlying principle in Paul may also have implications for the ways in which Christians might appropriate Paul’s writings for today. |
